Spaces for Sports

Compassion for Migrant Children and Barclays are teaming up to bring the Barclay’s Spaces for Sports program in China, with the goal of providing a platform for social inclusion and personal development for migrant children and their parents at a migrant community in Beijing.

The Spaces for Sports Community Sports Centre concepts is based on Barclay’s Spaces for Sports concept that has been widely recognized in UK, US, South Africa and several other countries as an effective tool for revitalizing and rejuvenating underprivileged communities (http://www.barclays.com/community/spacesforsports/index.html).  It is a £30 million program across the UK and the country’s single biggest investment in grassroots sport by a private company and has won various prestigious awards for its contribution to local communities.

By constructing high-quality sport facilities in a migrant community in Beijing and establishing expert value-based programs aimed at migrant kids and their families, this project will provide an improved physical and social environment through which some of the burning migrant-related issues in the area will be addressed.

Local and international sports organizations will be involved to provide qualified and value-based sport programs to Dongba’s children and engage the parents in coaching and administrative roles. The existing programs at the CMC Community Center will be linked in to provide more of an educational and character-building impact on attendees of the sports programs.

The Spaces for Sports Community Sports Centre facility and related community-based sport and educational programs will reduce the levels of neighborhood vandalism and contribute to revitalization of community through creation of a healthy and constructive environment for children’s development and engagement of parents in its programs. It will also decrease the self-perception of migrants as “second-grade” citizens by equipping them with modern facilities and providing the links to more of the world outside their communities, helping their integration into city environment and enabling them to take pride in their community.
